Homer Township Fire Protection District presents first ever "Exceptional Citizen Award"

Homer Twp FPD extends its thanks to Mr. John Flanagan

At the March 6th Board of Trustees meeting, The Homer Township Fire Protection District Board of Trustees proudly presented its first “Exceptional Citizen’s Award” to Mr. John Flanagan. The District extended their personal gratitude to John for his awareness and willingness to get involved. On December 6th 2016, Mr. Flanagan reported smoke and flames coming from a storage building that was off the road and difficult to see. Due to his swift action of calling 911, this incident was mitigated quickly with minor damage to the building which stores landscaping and snow removal equipment for local businesses.

We would like to remind everyone about the importance of calling 911 as soon as possible and never assume that someone else has already called. For years, we have preached that fire doubles in size every minute. There are new studies being conducted that may suggest fire doubles in size even more rapidly due to the new materials that are being used in so many products.

If you are in your home and see or smell smoke or the smoke detector activates, do not hesitate on starting your evacuation and calling 911. As in the case above, by calling 911 quickly, the fire loss was minimized due to the quick actions by Mr. Flanagan. The Fire District commends his actions and extends its sincere appreciation.
