Lock & Mule Earns Preservation Award

Lock & Mule will be honored at a public ceremony on Nov. 4 at the Chicago Cultural Center.

LOCKPORT, IL — Lock & Mule has earned a Landmarks Illinois preservation award, honoring its preservation efforts of the Lockport building. Landmarks Illinois awarded the business a Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award, which is an annual program celebrating preservation efforts in Illinois, according to a release.

Lock & Mule will be honored at a public ceremony on Nov. 4 at the Chicago Cultural Center.

“Our 2022 award winners demonstrate the impact preservation has in our Illinois communities: it creates inspiring places where people want to live and visit, boosts jobs and economic activity and strengthens local pride,” Bonnie McDonald, President & CEO of Landmarks Illinois, said in a release. “We are proud to bring well-deserved attention to these preservation efforts and the people who thoughtfully and beautifully preserved our historic places.”

Lock & Mule received its award for its "adaptive reuse" of the former Mackin Motor Company building in downtown Lockport, according to the organization. The building was built in 1927 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Other recipients included Hotel Belleville in Belleville, Chicago Cultural Center Grand Army of the Republic Rooms in Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo Pepper Family Wildlife Center in Chicago, Mattie Butler Apartments in Chicago, Pullman National Monument and State Historic Site in Chicago, Crown Brew Coffee Co. in Marion, Broadgauge in Petersburg, and Rockford City Market in Rockford.
