Lockport Approves Sidewalk Maintenance Program For 2023

Since the bid was higher than expected, the City has reduced the amount of sidewalks that will be repaired.

LOCKPORT, IL — At its Wednesday meeting, the Lockport City Council awarded a contract for the 2023 sidewalk program, to Whiteline Construction, Inc.

The City does an annual sidewalk maintenance program to replace damaged sections of sidewalk.

"We're looking at about a 40 percent increase on all construction and all pricing for infrastructure work since 2019," Public Works Director Brent Cann.

The City had budgeted $153,000 for the 2023 sidewalk program, but received one bid, which was higher than expected at $258,560.

"It's not just concrete, it's all of our infrastructure," Cann said of the cost increase.

Since the bid was higher than expected, the City has reduced the amount of sidewalks that will be repaired and awarded a contract for $175,172.

Sidewalk repair requests are accepted on a first-come, first served basis, according to Council documents. Cann said this year, all requests need to be received by November.

The City will then go out to bid in January on the sidewalks, in an effort to reduce costs, Cann said.

"Anything we cut from this year, it will be at the top of the list for next year," Cann said.
