Lockport Awarded Grant To Improve Railway Crossing Safety

Grant will allow improvement projects at three of Lockport's railroad crossings.

LOCKPORT, IL — The city of Lockport was recently awarded a $1,025,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois Commerce Commission for Railway Crossing Safety Improvements. The city said in a release the grant will fund four improvement projects at three of the city’s railway crossings at no cost to the city.

IDOT notified Lockport that it was awarded funding from the Railway-Highway Crossings Program through the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act to make safety improvements through the installation of:

  • Signals and pedestrian gates on 13th Street at the Metra Station along the Canadian National Railway Tracks
  • Pedestrian crossing signals and gate system on Eighth Street at the CN Railway Tracks
  • Pedestrian gates and warning system on W. Ninth Street at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Tracks

The grant award is for this fiscal year 2018, and the improvements are scheduled to be installed later this year, the city said. The city has also allocated $150,000 in the 2019 budget for any additional improvements to complement grant funded projects in the 2019 Capital Improvement Plan. CN crossings at Division Street and 10th Street would be a priority.
