Lockport Man Caught Driving Stolen Car With Open Beer Cans: Cops

A Lockport man was charged with DUI, possession of a stolen vehicle and several other charges.

LOCKPORT, IL — A Lockport man was arrested in Joliet after driving a stolen car with open beer cans in the car, according to Will County Sheriff's Office. Bernardo Leonardo, 47, of the 15400 block of South Muir Drive, was arrested at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 for DUI-drugs, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to carry license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, resisting arrest and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The sheriff's office said deputies saw a Chevy truck with a large trailer hitch that was blocking the vehicle registration around 7 p.m. Sunday. They pulled alongside the car and ran the number, and the vehicle registration came back as a stolen car out of Romeoville.

A traffic stop was made at Cass and Collins streets in Joliet, according to the sheriff's office. While speaking to Leonardo, officers saw open beer cans inside the car. Leonardo was taken into custody and was seated in the squad car when he escaped the vehicle and took off running while handcuffed. Officers once again took custody of Leonardo.
