LTHS Senior Earns Perfect Score On AP Exam

LOCKPORT, IL — Lockport Township High School senior Sophia Marcial earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture Exam in May 2021, the school said in a release. Marcial not only received the top score of 5, but was also one of only 77 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam, receiving the maximum score on each portion of the exam.

LTHS said Marcial was supported by language teachers Kathy Pratt and Andrea Quintanar.

“I was so impressed with Sophia’s brilliance in expressing herself in academic Spanish in the Spanish for Heritage Learners course, that I recommended that she advance to AP Spanish Language and Culture her sophomore year, a recommendation that I had never made before," Quintanar, who taught Marcial for Heritage Spanish and AP Spanish Literature, said.

Pratt, who teaches AP Spanish Language and Culture teacher, recommended Marcial for AP Spanish Literature.

Quintanar said Marcial regularly displayed her "unique aptitude to connect the global and historical context to the literary works through revealing analysis."

Marcial is also studying Japanese.

"Sophia's impressive achievement is a testament to both her tremendous intellect and work ethic. I am also thrilled that her accomplishment shines light on the expert teaching of the LTHS World Language Department," Tammy Gallagher, LTHS AP Coordinator said in a release.

According to the school, LTHS offers 26 different AP courses for students.
