Classroom read-alongs embraced a spooky theme this week as teachers created a special Spooky Reading room for everyone to enjoy.

The Schilling Reading Committee created the dark reading nook in one of the classrooms, complete with light-up pumpkins, a glow-in-the dark skeleton and a witches hat and broom.

The goal is to promote a love of reading, explained reading teacher Carrie Jermolowicz.

Teachers took turns visiting the Spooky Reading room with their classrooms, bringing a Halloween-themed book along to read-aloud together.

“It’s spooky in here,” one kindergartner told her teacher, Kimberly Hetfleisch, as she entered the Spooky Reading room with her classmates.

“There’s nothing to be afraid of,” Hetfleisch assured her.

Once everyone settled in, she encouraged students to look around at the decorations before they started reading “The Runaway Pumpkin” together.

“I know you’re excited,” she told students.

Soon, they were pointing to every decoration in the room, eager to be the first one to spot it.

The Spooky Reading room will remain open through Halloween day.
