Statement from the Homer Township Assessor Office of Carmen Maurella III

A complaint raised by a decorated veteran in which the Homer Township Assessor's Office was referenced, I want to clarify of our role.

In light of a complaint raised by a decorated veteran in which the Homer Township Assessor’s Office was referenced, I want to clarify our role and address this matter directly.

As the Homer Township Assessor’s Office, our responsibility is to assist residents in navigating the property tax process, including helping eligible veterans file for the exemptions they have earned through their service. While our office does not grant or approve these benefits, we take seriously our duty to help veterans understand and properly file the applications available to them under the law.

As Assessor, and as someone with a brother who served in the military, I understand the sacrifice and commitment required of those who wear our nation’s uniform. That is why I believe veterans deserve respect, fairness, and dignity in every discussion that involves their service.

It is deeply disappointing to see a former leader of a veterans’ organization publicly question another veteran. Veterans deserve respect, and raising doubts about a disabled Marine’s character or disability status is wrong. Their service should never become a political talking point..

Our veterans earned their benefits through service and sacrifice. They should never be treated as political talking points. The Homer Township Assessor’s Office will always work to ensure veterans are treated with the respect they deserve and that they receive the assistance needed to access the exemptions available to them under Illinois law.
