The Homer Glen Public Works Department also gave some tips to keep pipes from freezing. One of the easiest ways to prevent frozen pipes is by keeping one or more of your faucets on or at around five to 10 droplets per minute (usually from the cold water supply) to alleviate pressure in the plumbing system, according to the Village Facebook page.
It is important to drip the faucet during sub-freezing temperatures, especially if you have plumbing that aligns an outside wall or in a non-heated area of the home. For most homes, this would be the kitchen, laundry room, utility rooms, attics and garage sinks.
Homeowners with areas that have plumbing under cabinets on an exterior wall, should open the cabinet doors during times when the outside temperature falls below freezing, the department advised.
