Where Do Homer Glen And Lockport Rank On Safest Towns List?

A study by the National Council for Home Safety and Security took a look at violent crime and property crime rates.

HOMER GLEN-LOCKPORT, IL — A new ranking of crime rates from the National Council for Home Safety and Security shows that some of the safest cities in Illinois are right here in the Chicago metropolitan area. Homer Glen ranked near the top of the list, coming in at No. 5, right behind Waterloo and just above Lindenhurst.

Homer Glen has a population of 24,421 and 6 violent crimes, according to the study. It also had 116 property crimes, or 4.75 property crimes per 1,000 people.

Lockport ranked No. 30 on the list, coming in just behind Plainfield and right above Geneva. Lockport has a population of 25,223, and 22 violent crimes, according to the study. It also had 193 property crimes, or 7.65 property crimes per 1,000 people.

Illinois' 50 Safest Towns: 2018 Rankings

Illinois has fewer per capita property crimes than most states but more violent crimes, according to the rankings. Its violent crime rate made it the 35th-safest state in the U.S., when adjusted for population, but it has the 18th lowest rate of property crimes.

Chicago was ranked 195th out of 206 Illinois cities, with a rate of more than 11 violent crimes and nearly 32 property crimes per 1,000 people.

The five least-safe towns on the list were Springfield, Rockford, East St. Louis, Mount Vernon, Lansing and Danville.
