Woman, Infant Unhurt After Fire Destroys Home In Lockport

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

LOCKPORT, IL — A woman and her infant child were unhurt after a fire on Sunday night in the 21200 block of Covington Drive in the Lakewood Falls subdivision. The fire department said it responded at 11:10 p.m. for the report of a structure fire.

When fire crews arrived, the two-story home was heavily involved in fire and crews went to a defensive attack. The department said the fire was able to be brought under control in about 30 minutes, but crews stayed on scene for a few hours performing extensive overhaul.

The interior of the home was collapsed and all overhaul operations had to be conducted from the outside of the building. The occupant of the residence was sleeping at the time, but was awakened by the smoke detectors, the department said. She and her child were able to evacuated the home without injury.

Lockport was assisted by Romeoville and Plainfield Fire at the scene while Bolingbrook,
East Joliet, Homer, Plainfield and Troy provided change of quarters station coverage.

The Lockport Fire District would like to emphasize how this fire stresses the importance of
working smoke detectors. The department said you should have a working smoke detector in every bedroom and on every level of your home, including the basement.
