Alleged Drunken Driver Runs Home after Hit-and-Run

Police found her at home, where she tried to evade arrest.

A Homewood woman faces charges of DUI, resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident, after police tracked her down following her involvement in a hit-and-run.


Katherine Burke, 33, of the 18500 block of Highland Avenue, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol content over the legal limit, leaving the scene of an accident, following too closely, resisting arrest, driving without valid registration and failure to show proof of insurance after a Jan. 23 crash, according to Homewood police reports.

Burke was accused of being involved in a hit-and-run accident at about 5:12 p.m. at the intersection of 183rd Street and Riegel Road, the report stated. Police eventually caught up to her near her home on Highland Avenue, the report added.

During the stop, Burke exited her dark-colored GMC and stumbled to the rear of the vehicle, the report stated. As police spoke with Burke, an officer noticed that she had trouble standing, her speech was slurred, her eyes were glossy and bloodshot, and an odor of alcohol could be detected, the report added. While talking with police, Burke tried to run away from police and flee to her nearby house, the report stated. She was taken into custody after that, the report added.
