Alleged Drunken Driver Found Asleep Behind the Wheel

A 20-year-old Oak Forest man and his friend had passed out in a car while it was in drive, sending it on to a curb.

An Oak Forest man faces DUI and drug charges after Homewood police found him asleep behind the wheel of a car in drive.

Dequan Powell, 20, of the 5300 block of Martha Lane, Oak Forest, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of marijuana after an early New Year’s Day traffic stop, according to Homewood police reports.

At about 2 a.m., police noticed Powell, who was in the driver’s seat, and another man asleep in a vehicle parked in the exit lane of the parking lot for Jewel, 17631 S. Halsted St., the report stated. The vehicle’s motor was running, it was in drive, and the left front tire was elevated over the curb, the report added.

While speaking with Powell, police noticed his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred, and a pot odor was coming from his clothes and breath, the report stated. A protective pat down of Powell uncovered a clear plastic bag filled with 4 grams of a green plant material that field tested as marijuana, the report added.
