Work On Dixie Highway Viaduct Set To Begin

The Dixie Highway North Viaduct is expected to close for at least 90 days on June 8, the Village said.

HOMEWOOD, IL — Work is set to begin on a months-long project to address flooding issues at the Dixie Highway viaduct, the Village said this week.

While construction was originally anticipated to begin earlier this spring, officials recently received confirmation from contractor Iroquois Paving of Watseka, Illinois, that work will officially begin Monday, June 1, the Village said.

The full 90-day closure of the Dixie Highway North Viaduct is scheduled to begin on June 8. Construction is anticipated to continue through approximately October 2026.

Prior to and during the closure, IDOT will coordinate efforts to ensure detour routes are clearly posted in advance. Village staff will continue closely monitoring the project and related traffic impacts throughout construction.

The infrastructure work is meant to address longstanding flooding issues at the viaduct, officials previously said. Plans includes critical drainage work beneath the viaduct, along with new pavement and updated traffic patterns from Spruce Road to Park Avenue, the Village said.

Although the project was originally scheduled for 2027, IDOT accelerated the timeline after determining that the drainage issues needed to be addressed sooner to help reduce repeated flooding. Bidding for the project officially began in January 2026.

Additional updates, including specific closure dates, detours, and construction milestones, will be shared on the Village's Facebook, in its digital newsletter, and through the Village of Homewood app.
