FLOSSMOOR, IL — In response to the recent storms and tornadoes that caused significant damage throughout Chicago's south suburbs, You Matter 2, in partnership with A Perfect Harmony and On the Pull Up Mobile Kitchen, will host a South Suburban Storm Relief Pop-Up on Thursday, Aug. 13, to provide immediate support to local families.
The free community event will offer burgers, hot dogs, backpacks, and school supplies while supplies last.
The relief effort was organized as a rapid response to the damage experienced by families and neighborhoods throughout the area. With many residents managing storm cleanup and unexpected disruptions, the partnering organizations hope to provide a practical source of relief while bringing the community together.
"As an organization rooted in the South Suburbs, we believe it's important to show up for our community not only through our year-round youth programs, but also during moments when our neighbors need additional support," said Destiny Watson, Founder & CEO of You Matter 2. "This is about coming together, responding quickly, and making sure families know their community is here for them."
Community members are encouraged to share information about the event with families who may have been impacted by the storms or who could benefit from additional support.
You Matter 2 is also seeking volunteers and in-kind donations to support the relief effort. Volunteers will assist with event setup, food and backpack distribution, organizing supplies, welcoming families, and other event needs.
Those interested in volunteering can register at youmatter2.org/volunteer.
The organizations are also accepting donations of cases of bottled water, individual bags of chips, and juice. Donations may be dropped off at Flossmoor Community House beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 13.
Because of significant storm damage in the surrounding area, attendees and volunteers are encouraged to use caution while traveling and parking near the event location and to remain mindful of debris, damaged trees, road closures, and other potential hazards
