FLOSSMOOR, IL — Flossmoor School District 161 Heather Hill School students in first through third grade recently welcomed author and literacy advocate John Schu for a lively and engaging celebration of books, reading, and the power of stories. Schu is a passionate advocate for connecting children with books and helping young readers discover stories they love. He is the author of several books, including This Is a School, This Is a Story, and Ruthie Rose's Big Idea: A Poetry Story, written by Schu and illustrated by Veronica Miller Jamison.
From the moment the presentation began, students were drawn into Schu's enthusiasm and energy. His lively presentation featured a call-and-response style that had students actively participating and waiting to see what Mr. Schu would say or do next. The room was filled with student voices, laughter and excitement as Schu shared his love of books and encouraged students to see reading as an experience to be enjoyed.
Many students and adults also received books from Schu, giving them the opportunity to take a new story home and continue the excitement of the visit.
"This was such a wonderful experience for our students," said Mrs. Seena Purham, Assistant Principal at Heather Hill. "Mr. Schu knows how to connect with children. The students were completely engaged, and you could see how excited they were to participate and hear what was coming next."
The visit was made possible through the work of the Heather Hill Elementary School Reading Team, which continues to create opportunities that inspire students to read, explore new books and develop a lifelong love of reading.
"We are grateful to our Reading Team for bringing this experience to Heather Hill, and for the work they do every day to put great books into the hands of our students," added Purham.
