Burglar Tried to Kick Down Door for 'Small Items to Fit in His Pockets': Police

Police say the 19-year-old tried to rob the home Jan. 20.

A 19-year-old Harvey man faces a felony charge of attempted residential burglary after police say he tried to break into a home Jan. 20.


Derwin Covington Jr., 19, of the 14400 block of Union St., Harvey, was arrested and charged with felony attempted residential burglary Jan. 20 is accused of trying to burglarize a home in the 18300 block of Dixie Highway, according to Homewood police reports.

Police responded to a call around 2:14 p.m. about a burglary in progress, the report stated. When police arrived at the scene, the resident had chased and detained Covington, who had been caught kicking the resident’s front door, the report added.

While in custody, Covington told police he was trying to break in to the house in order to steal small items that would fit into his pockets, the report stated.
