Don Popravak Falls in Race for Homewood-Flossmoor School Board
Popravak showed gratitude for a "spirited" campaign.

Longtime community resident Don Popravak was unsuccessful in his attempt to win a seat on the Homewood-Flossmoor District 233 Board of Education.
After learning of the results on Tuesday, Popravak expressed his gratitude for those that supported his campaign, as well as his family and friends who offered their support throughout the campaign process.

Popravak also thanked his opponents for running a spirted campaign. He believes that the goal of his campaign can still be accomplished through raised awareness of specific community issues.
“We’re looking forward to a bright future for our schools, neighborhoods and community,” Popravak said. “The ultimate goal was to bring forward issues that we thought were important to the community.”

Popravak stressed the fact that the primary goal of the school board and members of the community should be keeping the students’ best interests in mind.
“It’s all about the kids,” he said. “Building stronger schools and strengthening relationships with the community is important.”
With so much riding on election results, Popravak stressed the importance of increased voter turnout in future years. This year’s turnout was under 13.8 percent, meaning 28,000 registered voters in the district did not participate in the election.
“As a community, we have to get more people involved in our local elections because they’re so integral to everything we do,” Popravak said. “The local elections should matter to everyone who pays property taxes in our district, especially because 77 percent of our tax dollars go to our school.”
