Fan: H-F Vikings Football Made It Happen in 2014

'...people believe that the road to a state championship starts with the first game.... The hard work starts first in the homes.'

What an outstanding accomplishment by the HF Viking Football team. To finish second in the state for the Class 8A title is nothing short of fantastic. The hard work of Coach Buzea, Coach Cicero, and their outstanding coaching team continues to pay dividends.

Many people believe that the road to a state championship starts with the first game in August. That, however, is not quite accurate. The hard work starts first in the homes, the community, and in the schools that the students attend. When these three pillars are working together, there is absolutely nothing the student-athletes, and, indeed, the students can’t achieve. These Viking players are part of a community that is supportive and unyielding in their commitment to providing a first rate childhood experience for their children. Just go to one of the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District events and witness the enormous parental support. During the next fall season, attend one of the Junior Vikings’ games at Apollo Park in Homewood. You will truly understand what it means to be apart of a community that truly values their children and why the foundation is so strong for these football players.

The schools benefit so much from the stability that is afforded to them. I had the pleasure of watching these young men grow up, while serving as the Dean of Students at Parker Junior High School for nine years, and keeping a watchful eye on them as they matriculated to Homewood-Flossmoor High School, one of the best high schools in the country, being led by outstanding leaders, such as Dr. Mansfield and Dr. Pitcock. I recall those days when those young men would throw the football around just playing catch, talking about what they were going to do when they attended HF. As I, along with a few staff members would admire their skill level and sense of purpose at such a young age. I remember having long conversations with former Division I player and mentor, Mr. Bill Cunningham, Mrs. Bayles, Mr. Romison Saint-Louis, Mr. Brozynski and Mr. Germeraad about how special they were going to be when they reached high school. We knew that once coach Buzea and his staff demonstrated their coaching prowess, the sky was going to be the limit. Coach Buzea your accomplishments are not happening by chance. You are simply an outstanding person and coach. You truly care about the well being of your players. They are on the road to becoming responsible young men right in front of our eyes.

If I can speak for the community let me say, “Thank you HF for exemplifying excellence and being a symbol of what this community is all about.” We are so proud of the players, Coach Buzea and his coaching team, the staff, and the administrative team at Hf that gave us so much to look forward to on those Friday nights.” Players keep up the good work. Please know that this community loves and supports you.
