Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Recognizes Daisy Award Recipient

Franciscan Health Olympia Fields Intensive Care registered nurse Carol Huffman is the hospitals latest international Daisy Award recipient. The Richton Park resident was acknowledged by a patient who was recently treated for COVID-19 at the Olympia Fields hospital.

In an emotional letter, the patient explained that Huffman, who has been in nursing for 45 years, never gave up during the worst moments fighting COVID-19 symptoms.

“She wouldn’t give up on me,” the patient wrote. “Carol was always talking to me and encouraging me to fight when she knew I just wanted to sleep. She would sometimes come in my room and give me a look. It seems like every five minutes she was in my room doing something to me, keeping me alert and functioning”.

The patient also explained that she was holding back tears while writing the letter as she recalled her worst moments suffering from coronavirus,

“Carol would turn me, make me squeeze her hand, wave at me when outside my room,” she wrote. ”I knew then that God sent an angel to help me fight because I couldn’t do it by myself”.
