Mike Christensen would do anything he could to help those around him. The father of three opened his family’s Homewood residence to his children’s friends who needed a place to go, and he was caring for his elderly mother.

He was “the most generous person I’ve ever met in my life,” said his friend Dawn Hommer. She and his family are heartbroken over his sudden death Saturday, May 9. Christensen died in his sleep, leaving behind 20-year-old son Michael, 17-year-old son Andrew, and daughter Kayla, 16. The children attended Homewood schools, including Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

“He was just the best guy you could ever possibly know,” Hommer said.

Christensen was formerly a mechanic, but was on disability after injuring himself on the job, she said. He enjoyed fishing, and was a member of the Piscateers and Calumet Yacht Club. Hommer has started an online fundraiser to offset funeral costs for the family.
