Hastings votes to keep Illinois open

Legislation provides funding to allow essential services to continue

TINLEY PARK-State Senator Michael Hastings (D-Tinley Park) voted in favor of a temporary one-month budget in order to allow for essential services to continue until a long term solution is reached.

“The answer is not to shut the government down. We do not need Washington gridlock in Springfield,” Hastings said. “Shutting down services provided to those with serious mental health and developmental disabilities is unacceptable. Moreover, not paying those that provide emergency services in times of need is flat wrong. I stand ready to work with the governor to help pass a budget that will make Illinois great again, but I refuse to close our government down.”

Senate Bill 2040 provides for funding to agencies like the Illinois Supreme Court, Veteran Affairs, Human Services, Corrections, State Police and the Secretary of State.

According to Josh Evans, Vice President of the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, shutting down the government will result in 15,000 individuals with serious mental illnesses being negatively impacted. This would include the loss of evidence-based treatment and recovery support services including psychiatry, crisis services and housing. Approximately 914 staff members who support these services will also be laid off.

Senate Bill 2040 passed the Senate by a 37-0-11 vote and will be voted on in the Illinois House of Representatives next week.
