The Hillcrest IMC celebrated National Foreign Language Week with a variety of activities for students to enjoy. This special week was inaugurated in the spring of 1957 by Sister Eloise Therese, the National President of Alpha Mu Gamma from 1956 to 1960. Alpha Mu Gamma is the first and largest national collegiate foreign language honor society of the U.S. National Foreign Language week is to make the American student aware of the vital necessity for foreign language study. Not only did the IMC attract readers to their display of books in various foreign languages, but they provided sets of conversation cards at student tables. These conversation cards, created by Student Aide Ashley Moore, included questions about the benefits of learning a foreign language. The IMC also sponsored a World Map game challenging students to provide the official language of 15 countries that were identified on a wall map. Students who correctly identified all 15 languages were entered into a prize drawing. The winner of the basket of treats from around the world was Mia Jones. “The week was a great way for the students to connect to the foreign language curriculum, stated Lisa Walsh, IMC Media Specialist.
