Hillcrest HS Concert Choir Has a Busy Schedule

Black History Month performances have kept the choir busy

The Hillcrest Concert Choir participated in the Black History Month Program at Hillcrest High School. The choir led the school in the singing of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the black national anthem. In addition, the choir sang a medley of songs from the late gospel genius, Andre Crouch. The performance was capped with “Glory,” the Oscar winning song by John Legend from the Oscar nominated movie “Selma.”

To add to their busy schedule, the choir continued with Black History Month performances by participating in the Chicago State University celebration. Chicago State University (CSU) is the only Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) in Illinois. All throughout February, CSU students, faculty, and staff celebrated Black History Month with a series of social activities, lectures and discussions, and a variety of other events. The Hillcrest Concert Choir joined other schools from Chicago, the south suburbs, and staff from CSU in a tribute to gospel music. While at CSU, the Hillcrest students had the unique pleasure of hearing the university music faculty perform.

“What an enlightening experience! Not only were we able to sing, but we had the pleasure of hearing some exceptional musical pieces. It was great to be involved in such an extravaganza,” said Maurice Edmonson, Hillcrest Concert Choir member.
