Hillcrest HS Culinary Students Visit Five Guys & TP Convention Center

Culinary Management students received a look at the importance of safety and sanitation in the food industry

Hillcrest and Bremen High School’s Culinary Management Students collaborated for an amazing opportunity to tour the Tinley Park Convention Center and Five Guys Burgers, for a glimpse into the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Industries.

The students were able to get a preview of what it takes to run a large convention center. They also were introduced to the many career opportunities in running a convention center of this size. The students witnessed the initial preparation of menu and the execution of the plan.

Then, the students enjoyed lunch and a tour of the Five Guys front of the house and back of the house restaurant in Tinley Park. They received a candid look at the importance of safety and sanitation in the food service industry. "The students really enjoyed the tours and could better understand how the skills we learn in class can be applied in “real world” situations,” said Rachel Flood, Bremen High School Family & Consumer Science Teacher.

After the interactive visit, the students did so well with asking questions and participating, that they were asked to apply for current job openings and volunteer work for the fall of 2016. “The students could experience first-hand the pride the Five Guys staff took in customer satisfaction and food service safety," said Mrs. Sweeny, Hillcrest Culinary Arts Instructor.
