Hillcrest HS Entrepreneurship Students Place Third in Stock Market Game

The Stock Market Game teaches students about investments and long-term saving

Congratulations to Hillcrest High School’s Entrepreneurship students on winning Third Place for the spring 2015 session of The Stock Market Game. In the Southwest Suburban Grades 9–12 competition, 675 student teams participated.

Mr. Dave Braden’s class increased their original $100,000 cash account to a final equity of $104,995 during the session running from February thru April. During the competition, 18 of the 23 students finished with portfolio’s over 100,000. Finishing in Fourth Place overall was Senior Angelika Green with $124,691; Fifth Place, Senior Taron Edwards with $124,347; and Sixth Place, Senior Nyles Moffett with $120,247. Other outstanding efforts (all finishing in the top 50 with over $110,000) were Natlie Williams, Demetria Williams, Taylor Adway, Justin Newton, Javell Taylor, and Keion Johnson.

The Stock Market Game, an educational program of Econ Illinois, teaches students about the world of investments, helping them learn to research companies, make sound investment decisions, and follow those investments over a number of weeks during the school year.

Student teams begin with a virtual cash account. They create and manage a portfolio, which may include stocks, mutual funds and bonds. Teams conduct research and evaluate potential investments. They decide together how they want to invest their cash, based on what they have learned. Even though the money is not real, stock transactions are processed at real-time prices, connecting The Stock Market Game experience with real life.

The Stock Market Game experience helped build a foundation for our student’s understanding of the importance of long-term saving and investing.
