It’s not every day that you can pretend you’re a child again, hop on a seesaw, play giant jenga, and taste-test, but you could at the Hillcrest High School annual STEM night. Hillcrest's Science Department coordinated their efforts to host the 3rd Annual STEM Night at Hillcrest High. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines- science, technology, engineering and mathematics- in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. The entire student body, faculty, administrative staff, and community was invited to view demonstrations, engage in numerous and varied activities, test their tasting and building skills, and learn more about what STEM means. Students and parents worked together to view and participate in exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. “It was educational and enjoyable to spend my evening at school working on cool projects. I enjoyed creating ice cream and playing Giant Jenga,” stated student Victoria McCullum. “The night was a huge success! All of the activities were student led and hands-on. The science department is commended for their leadership, team work, and dedication to our students, community and school,” stated Mrs. Jane Molek, Science Teacher. The entire science department participated by having their students host/lead various labs, experiments, and activities. The evening stations included: Lights/Lasers, Dominoes, Giant Jenga, forensic activities, Ice Cream, Glow Germ Bacteria Spread, Dissections, Biomimicry, Microscopes, Water taste-test, Radar/Speed analysis, Sound tubes and Boom whackers, Dancing Oobleck, Spool Racers, Newton’s Cradle, and giant Seesaw.
