Hillcrest HS Poetry Club Presents at Black History Assembly
Original poetry celebrates African American figures
Recently, members of Hillcrest High School’s Flight Poetry Club presented “Someone You Should Know” during the Black History Assembly. Their collage of original poetry was written to celebrate notable African American figures. Students were excited about the opportunity to use the written word as a means of sharing the contributions of Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Emmitt Till, Lupe Fiasco, and Diana Ross.
Flight Poetry Club member Savannah Wooden wrote and recited an original poem honoring entertainment legend Oprah Winfrey. “Performing in front of my peers was a new experience for me. I felt honored to share a part of Black history that came from my heart,” said Wooden.
“I am so glad our talented poets were included in the Black History Month assembly. Students chose the individual they wanted as their inspiration, and I am very proud of their performance. It takes a lot of nerve to speak in front of one’s peers, and my poets did a fantastic job,” said Ms. Brittan Russell, Flight Poetry Club advisor.
