Hillcrest HS Spanish 1 Students Hold Lucha Libre Matches
Students created their own 'luchadores' and held 'lucha libre' matches
Ms. Kristen Kaczmarek’s Spanish 1 students at Hillcrest High School had fun learning about Spanish culture when they created their own luchadores (fighters) and held Lucha Libre (mask fighting) matches in the classroom. The students created a mask out of gloves and had a thumb wrestling tournament. They had fun creating an individualized mask and learning about the sport. “ It was nice to see my students having fun while learning about Spanish culture! We are currently studying deportes (sports) and we always learn about baseball, basketball, and soccer. However, there is a fun sport that the textbooks don’t cover and that is masked fighting or lucha libre,” stated Ms. Kaczmarek.
The students enjoyed learning about some fancy wrestling moves and the history behind the sport. We also compared and contrasted the sport to WWE in American culture. “It was amazing to see how much fun the students had with the project and how engaged they were with the lessons; it was an exciting lesson!” stated Ms. Kaczmarek.
