Hillcrest HS Students Volunteer at Hot Chocolate Run
The Interact Club served treats and handed out goodie bags to the runners
The Hillcrest Interact Club volunteered at the Hot Chocolate 15k/5k Race Expo in Chicago on November 6. Hillcrest Interact Club members have fun while carrying out a variety of service projects. Students spent the morning distributing race goodie bags to the more than 200,000 participants. The chocolate began to flow at the post race party and our Hillcrest students manned the hot chocolate mug and chocolate fondue stations. They created and distributed the chocolate and marshmallow treats to all visitors. “This was definitely a learning experience for our students, as they had to engage in problem solving, customer service, and procedural skills with just a few minutes of training. Our students did an awesome job and left a lasting impression on event coordinators! In fact Moriam Yarrow, a Hillcrest senior, improved the process used for creating the chocolate marshmallow treats. The process change was so effective that the event coordinators adopted Moriams’ method and requested that she train other volunteers before leaving,” said Ms. Wade, Hillcrest Interact Club Sponsor. The Hot Chocolate race is sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House Charities, which partners with the Hot Chocolate 15k/ 5k series. The RMHC provides a “home-away-from-home” for families facing a serious medical crisis. The proceeds from race registration fees benefit the numerous charities supported by the foundation. “It was fun seeing the runners cross the finish line. We worked hard all day but we were able to sample the delicious hot chocolate and marshmallow fondue,” said Kevin Moore.
