Hillcrest HS's Ricks Chosen as a Student Ambassador
Ahnia Ricks traveled to Italy, France and Greece as an ambassaor in the 'People to People' program
Hillcrest’s very own Ahnia Ricks was chosen as a student ambassador in the “People to People” program, sponsored by Washington School of World Studies. Ahnia had six months of pre-travel coursework and preparation, which had her working closely with a delegation leader, travel experience that provided personal growth, and post-travel reflective work that included attending delegations, submitting coursework from online modules, completing tests and quizzes, projects, essays and a final project to earn credits. She met the goals set for her in the following areas: civics, economics, geography, and history. While staying with a host family in Italy, Ahnia was learning the system of the Italian economy, studied their political structure, and enjoyed the Italian cuisine. She also had a lot of fun rock climbing and meeting new friends. Her next stop was France. “We visited the Palace of Versailles, I actually climbed the Eiffel Tower, and was able to tour the beautiful city of Paris. I ate snails and plenty of French pastries,” stated Ahnia. For the final stop on their journey, the ambassadors had the unique opportunity to visit the historic city of Athens, Greece. They explored the Athens culture, met the hospitable people, and enjoyed the great climate. The group experienced the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and the actual spots where the foundations of Western Civilization were laid. Ahnia was able to complete a cooking lesson of the traditional Greek cuisine and a class on Greek dances!
