Homewood, Flossmoor Softball Champion Teams Battle for the Helmet

Champions of feeder programs for Homewood-Flossmoor High School softball square off Tuesday, June 30.

A crosstown rivalry will take to the field this week, as the Homewood Softball Senior League Champion Royal Pains take on the Flossmoor Champion Giants. This is the inaugural Inter-League title game between the two neighborhood programs that feed into HF High School.

The Royal Pains, sponsored by Aurelio’s Pizza, won the Homewood title with a 7-3 Semi-Final win over the Red Wolves and 10-7 Championship game over the White Sox. Pains Starting pitcher Jenna Bostick went the complete game distance (7 innings) in both play-off games. Bostick enters the title game against Flossmoor with a season record of 8-2 along with 4 saves. Pains have three players who played for H-F this past season including Tyra Grady, Asia West and Kaylee Tarzon.

The Giants, sponsored by Coleman Roofing, won the Flossmoor title with an extra inning 13-11 victory over the Mariners. Giants are led by power hitting shortstop/catcher Megan Dwyer. Dwyer won the Flossmoor title game with a two run homer over the fence in the eighth inning at Flossmoor Park. Audrey Brown will get the start on the mound for the Giants.

Homewood Senior League President Robert Maszak and Flossmoor Senior League President Jeff Kidd have worked together since last winter to bring both leagues together this season. Throughout the year, the teams from both leagues have competed against each other at Izaak Walton, Flossmoor Park, Highland Field and Apollo Park.

The winning team on Tuesday, June 30 will receive a Viking Helmet Traveling Trophy sponsored by Forever Yogurt in Flossmoor. Throughout the year, the trophy will be displayed throughout various business and restaurants of the winning team. The Homewood and Flossmoor girls programs hope to see a great crowd for the game Tuesday night.

Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
