To avoid becoming a crime victim during the holiday season, the Homewood Police Department offers these safety tips.

HOMEWOOD, IL - With the holiday season upon us, the Homewood Police Department wants everyone to have a safe and happy holiday season. To avoid becoming a crime victim, officers are offering these safety tips:

Shopping Tips

  • Shop during daylight hours when possible. If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area.
  • Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked.
  • Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running.*Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your vehicle.
  • When approaching or leaving your car, be aware of your surroundings.
  • Do not leave packages or valuables in your car in plain view.
  • Keep a secure hold on your purse and parcels.

Home Tips

  • Be extra cautious about locking your doors when you leave the house and set your alarm or security cameras before you leave.
  • Leave your indoor and outdoor lights on when you leave your house.
  • Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.
  • Take packages and valuables out your car and remember to keep your car locked when at home.
  • If you go out of town notify your neighbors.
