Marvin Austin, Former Homewood Trustee, Dies

Marvin Austin was an assistant chief for the Homewood Fire Department and the original manager for Homewood Little League.

HOMEWOOD, IL - Marvin L. Austin, a former village of Homewood trustee and one who was involved with numerous local organizations, died last week. He was 89.

In addition to having served on the village board, Austin was a retired Assistant Fire Chief for the Homewood Fire Department. He also was one of the original founders of the Homewood Little League and was one of the first coaches of the Homewood Park District boys and girls basketball programs.

He was a retired assistant manager for Insurance Services Office and served as chairman of the Fire Department Instructors Conference, executive secretary of the International Fire Service Training Association. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Homewood and Trustee Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of First Presbyterian Church of Homewood.

His accolades earned him an induction into both the Homewood Hall of Fame and the Wall of Fame at Thornton Township High School.

Austin leaves behind his loving wife of 70 years, Marilyn Austin nee Meade as well as two children, two brothers, one sister and two sisters in-law.

A visitation for the longtime Homewood resident is planned for Friday, April 13 from 3-8 p.m. at the Tews-Ryan Funeral Home at 18230 Dixie Highway in Homewood. There will be a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the First Presbyterian Church of Homewood, 17929 Gottschalk Ave. in Homewood.

In lieu of flowers memorials to First Presbyterian Church of Homewood or the Homewood Paramedics would be appreciated. For additional information contact 708 798-5300.
