Rain Barrel Winner: Whiz Kid

Each week, H-F Patch features a "Whiz Kid", a student who has done something remarkable either in the classroom or in the community.

Josie Bachus, a fourth grade student at , submitted a winning entry in the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Rain Barrel Design Competition.

The contest was open to elementary school students across the state. Students were asked to decorate a templates of a rain barrel’s exterior.

Bachus's entry won not only because of on her creativity and artistic quality, but also for her design's best promotion of water re-use.

Western Avenue School received a free rain barrel and was acknowledged by IDOT during Earth Day festivities in April.
