Recreational Marijuana Tax Enacted In Homewood

Village of Homewood trustees agreed to enact a 3 percent sales tax on recreational marijuana beginning when the plant becomes legal in 2020.

HOMEWOOD, IL — Village trustees in Homewood have voted to enact a 3 percent tax on the sales of recreational marijuana within village limits once the plant becomes legal in Illinois in 2020. While the tax has been enacted, the village would still need to put into effect a local zoning amendment to authorize the sales, the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle reports.

The Chronicle reports that the 3 percent tax will be in addition to the general merchandise tax already enacted in Homewood, which would made the total tax on marijuana at 4 percent. Also, owners of the Windy City Cannabis medical marijuana facility already operating in Homewood have expressed interest in beginning recreational sales as well.
