Harvey Teen Sentenced For Attacking Teacher
Calvin Sutherland was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for the 2017 attack at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles.

KANE COUNTY, IL – A teenager from Harvey has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for brutally beating a teacher at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles while he was a student at the center, prosecutors said last week. Calvin Sutherland, 18, has pleaded guilty to aggravated battery to a teacher, a Class 3 felony, for the June 28, 2017 attack. Sutherland was a resident at the Illinois Youth Center when the incident occurred, according to a news release from the Kane County State's Attorney's Office.
He was in a classroom at the facility when a teacher entered and asked Sutherland to put away a deck of cards he had been using so she could start class, prosecutors said. When Sutherland refused to comply, the teacher left the classroom to get help from a guard who was in the hallway.
While she was in the doorway, Sutherland punched the teacher in the face several times, causing her to fall backward and strike her head on the floor. She was knocked unconscious and suffered a concussion, facial swelling, bruising and a strained neck.
