Scarecrow Decorating Contest Added to Homewood Fall Fest

Residents pay $6 to decorate a scarecrow and enter it into the contest. The scarecrows will be on display through the fall.

The Village of Homewood will debut a new addition to the 13th annual Fall Fest and Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, September 20 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Martin Ave. from Hickory to Ridge Road. Only 25 scarecrows remain. Residents pick up the scarecrows now, decorate them and submit them at Fall Fest for judging. All entries will have their scarecrows decorate the downtown area for the rest of the season. Find an entry form here.

Fall Fest 2014 features live entertainment for children and adults, horse-drawn wagon rides, the annual bean bag tournament, pony rides, games, art and craft vendors, a pumpkin patch and food from local eateries. Closing the evening is a free showing of The LEGO Movie. Homewood Fall Fest and Chili Cook-Off is hosted by the Community Relations Commission. Admission is free and open to the public. “Fall Fest is a time when Homewood opens its doors and welcomes all of Chicagoland to enjoy what makes the Village great,” said Village President Richard Hofeld. “It is one of the best outdoor festivals in all of the South Suburbs. It is a celebration of Homewood’s unique food, shopping, music and offers a great place to meet up with friends.”

Entertainment for Fall Fest 2014 kicks off with live music for the kids at noon with Scribble Monster and His Pals, featuring a blend of traditional children’s music, improv comedy and power pop to create a fun, interactive rock show for the whole family. Classic Rock cover-band Strung Out performs at 4 p.m. and a combination of Motown and salsa music by Latin Satin Soul is from 7 to 10 p.m. Also, The LEGO Movie will be shown at 8 p.m.

The Annual Chili Cook-Off Contest begins at 2 p.m. with the public tasting opening at 3 p.m. Competitors are vying for label of “Homewood’s Top Chef.” Advance registration is required by visiting www.HomeSweetHomewood.com

Additional activities at Fall Fest 2014 include a pumpkin patch and pumpkin decorating station, horse-drawn wagon rides through picturesque downtown Homewood from 6 to 9 p.m. The 8th Annual Bean Bag Tourney begins at 6:30 p.m. and draws participants from Chicago and the Southland region. Registration begins at 5 p.m. in person and teams are accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis at the Custom Bean Bag booth. This Tourney is not sanctioned by the American Cornhole Association (ACA).
