School Superintendent Announces Retirement 4 Years Ahead Of Time

Dale Mitchell of the Homewood School District 153 says he will retire once his new four-year contract is up.

HOMEWOOD, IL - The longtime superintendent of Homewood School District 153 has announced his retirement, but it won’t come for another four years. A four-year contract extension for Dale Mitchell was approved by the district’s board of education through the 2020-2021 school year last week but Mitchell has already indicated that will be the end of his run as chief, the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle reports.

“I am pleased that the board has extended my contract for another four years,” Mitchell said. “But then, it will be the right time for me and my family to move on to the next phase of our lives.”

Mitchell has been an employee of District 153 for 23 years and has been the superintendent for the last 14.

Board of Education President Shelly Marks is one who touts Mitchell’s work during the run, which is at the high end for a school district superintendent.

Marks said Mitchell deserves much of the credit for a smooth transition to grade centers in 2002 and for successful funding referendums in 2011 and 2016.
