Red Raiders Avance To Jacobs Title Game

Justin Frederick sank four free throws, and Amanze Egekeze added a blocked shot and a rebound in the final minute of the game Thursday as the Huntley High School boys varsity basketball team slipped past Chicago Hope Academy 66-60.

The victory advances Huntley to the championship game of the Jacobs Holiday Basketball Classic.

The Red Raiders, who’ll be competing for the tournament title for the second consecutive year, face Crystal Lake Central at 7:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 23, in Algonquin.

Crystal Lake advanced to the finale by nipping Elk Grove 61-59. In last year’s championship game Huntley lost to Mundelein 60-50.

To advance this time, Huntley had to overcome a 41-31 halftime deficit created after the Raiders were outscored 26-14 in the second quarter.

But then it was Huntley's turn to rally.

Led by Troy Miller, the Red Raiders outscored Hope Academy 23-8 in the third, including eight straight points at the onset, to take a 54-49 lead with one quarter remaining.

Midway through the fourth, Hope Academy gained a 58-57 advantage before Huntley (9-1 overall) pulled away to seal the win.

Leading the Red Raiders were Frederick and Miller, who scored 18 points each, and Bryce Only who added 13. Also scoring for Huntley were Egekeze (8 pts), Ryan Lussow (5), Jake Brock (2), and Ryan Craig (2).
