Watch Where You Park, The Cost of Parking Tickets Is Going Up

Village board votes to increase fines, late fees.

Anyone who parks illegally in Huntley will face higher fines, from $10 to $25 and the late fees are also going up to $50.

Huntley Police Chief John Perkins said the police department went to a new computer system recently and realized “we weren’t even breaking even,” on parking ticket fines.

The $10 parking tickets cost the department $12 to process, Perkins said.

“It’s not even a deterrent nowadays,” the chief said. Most people are in compliance, but those who aren’t would just pay the ticket rather than move their car, he said.

Last year, Huntley police issued 1,200 tickets last year, Perkins said. It was a 30 percent decrease from three years ago when 1,800 tickets were issued, he said.

Increasing the fees will generate about $20,000 a year.

Trustee Harry Leopold said the village did not increase fees to generate new funds.

“It’s just to bring the fees up to date,” Leopold said. “Our old scale is so outdated, it doesn’t even cover the cost of the paperwork.”

Parking tickets can now be paid online.
