As police continued to investigate the scene, officers contacted the Chicago Fire Department at around 4:45 a.m. to report a "funny smell" coming from inside the building, the report stated. A hazmat crew was deployed, and it was graded a level two situation, the report added. Six building residents were removed from the building while crews worked, according to the report.

At about 10 a.m., the Chicago Fire Department determined the building was secure, and there was no environmental danger. Fire officials and the Chicago Police Department were investigating the cause of the hazmat emergency. Police also were continuing their death investigation.
