Newberry Consort to Celebrate 30th Anniversary with Concert at Univ. of Chicago Oct. 22
The Newberry Consort, an ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago that focuses on early music, celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The Newberry Consort is excited to present a selection of bawdy music and dances from Shakespearean England for the Consort’s first concert of the season. Entitled “Kemp’s Jig,” the concert will take place Oct. 21-23 in Evanston, Hyde Park and at the Newberry Library.
In Elizabethan England, a jig was a term for a comedic skit that was set to music and usually performed after a play as additional entertainment, and William Kemp, who was a member of Shakespeare’s original troupe of actors, was famous in his day for performing these hilarious farces.
In this concert, Kemp expert Steve Player will portray Will Kemp, Shakespeare’s clown and dancer extraordinaire, and will lead the ensemble in these comic gems. Complete with costumes and sets, a violin band, lute and guitar, the jigs will feature bawdy songs, athletic dance, and theatrical shenanigans.
