Theft Suspect Ditches Baby While Trying to Escape From Cops: Police

Officers found the 1-year-old in the back seat of a car the suspect was driving before he abandoned it to try to elude them Wednesday.

CHICAGO, IL — A man suspected of stealing packages from a FedEx truck left a baby in the back seat of a car Wednesday morning as he was fleeing police, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The baby, 1, was not hurt, and charges are still pending against the suspect, according to the report.

Chicago police claim packages were stolen from a parked FedEx truck at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, in the 200 block of West Garfield Boulevard while the driver ate at a fast food restaurant, the report stated. The boxes then were deposited on the roof of a nearby building, the report added.

A witness alerted police after seeing at least one of the thieves drive away in a car, the report stated. Cops spotted the vehicle the witness described in the 5300 block of Princeton Avenue and tried to get the driver to pull over, the report added.

The suspect stopped the car, hopped out and ran from police, who pursued him on foot, the report stated. Officers apprehended the suspect, and as they returned to the car with him, they discovered the 1-year-old in the back seat, the report added.
