University of Chicago Doctor Killed While Jogging Near Jackson Park

​An SUV struck and killed Dr. Gary Toback Wednesday morning in South Shore.

CHICAGO, IL — A doctor at the University of Chicago was struck by an SUV and killed Wednesday morning near Jackson Park in the city’s South Shore neighborhood.

The victim, who unconfirmed reports indicate was jogging in the 6700 block of South Bennett Avenue at 7 a.m. when the crash occurred, died at the scene.

A University of Chicago statement indicates the victim was Dr. Gary Toback, a professor of medicine at the university.

Toback has practiced since 1967 and works in nephrology, according to information from the school's website.

"He was a treasured colleague, friend, mentor, leader and physician," the statement read in part.

The female driver of the SUV and a 2-year-old passenger were injured and hospitalized. The young girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital.

The SUV also struck a tree and rolled over.

Some buses were rerouted while police began an investigation into the crash.
