Video Of UCPD Shooting Emerges, Student Charged

University of Chicago student Charles Thomas faces several felonies after he was shot by a campus police officer in a Hyde Park alley.

CHICAGO, IL - Chicago police have charged the University of Chicago student who was shot by campus police late Tuesday night in Hyde Park. Charges have been filed against Charles Thomas, a 21-year-old police said was damaging windows of cars and apartment buildings in the 5300 block of South Kimbark Avenue before he was shot in the shoulder.

Thomas, who is recovering from a single gunshot wound at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, has been charged with one felony count of aggravated assault of a peace officer with a weapon, two felony counts of criminal damage to property ($300-$10,000) and two misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property of less than $300.

Several reports have indicated Thomas was experiencing a "manic episode" the night of the incident. A statement from the University of Chicago indicates he approached campus police officers in an alley near 53rd Street with the pole in hand in the instant before he was shot.

A video of the incident shows the student cursing at police officers in an alley as one told him to "drop the weapon" multiple times. The student is shown running toward the officer just as he was shot. The cursing continued after the suspect had been hit.

The Chicago Maroon uploaded the version they obtained from the University of Chicago Police Department to YouTube. The more than two-minute clip from the officer's body worn camera can be watched below.
