$1 Million Bond Set In Black Road Hit And Run Crash

Last Wednesday's wreck damaged at least three other vehicles at Black Road and Larkin Avenue.

JOLIET, IL - A 33-year-old Joliet resident was captured by police in connection with last week's hit and run crash at Larkin Avenue and Black Road. A criminal complaint filed Wednesday by the Will County State's Attorney's Office charges Demetrius Greene with committing three felony offenses and one misdemeanor crime. The crash occurred around dinner time on Jan. 10 and caused significant traffic delays for motorists heading home from work. Greene is accused of blowing a red light, driving the wrong way against traffic, striking at least one motorist's car and leaving that person injured, and then fleeing the scene.

According to the criminal complaint, the Joliet Police Department had identified Greene as their prime suspect by Friday. A bench warrant for his arrest was signed at that time by Will County Associate Judge Victoria Kennison and with a $1 million bond. Greene was booked into the Will County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, jail logs show. He needs to come up with $100,000 cash to bail himself out of jail while awaiting trial. Greene lives in the 700 block of Chase Avenue.

Greene is charged with the following crimes:

  1. Failure to report an accident involving personal injury or death, a felony
  2. Failure to stop after having an accident involving personal injury or death, a felony
  3. Aggravated reckless driving, a felony
  4. Driving while driver's license is revoked, a felony

The aggravated reckless driving charge accuses Greene of driving a 2009 Nissan Maurano "with a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property and in doing so (he) caused great bodily injury harm to (another driver) in that he drove northbound around stopped vehicles at the red light at Larkin Avenue and Black Road in Joliet ... and into the lanes for southbound traffic while still heading northbound into the intersection with active east and west bound traffic, thereby causing his vehicle to impact the vehicle driven by (another motorist)."

The criminal complaint also accuses Demetrius Greene of having "failed to stop the vehicle he was driving, a 2009 Nissan Maurano ... after that vehicle was involved in a minor vehicle accident at Larkin Avenue and Black Road in Joliet, Will County, Illinois, which resulted in personal injury to (another motorist) and thereafter knowingly failed to report the accident ... the place of the accident, the date, the approximate time ... at a police station or sheriff's office near the place where such accident occurred ... the Joliet Police Department or Will County Sheriff's Office, as soon as possible but in no case later than one half hour after the motor vehicle accident."
