3 Pot Smokers With 2 Stolen Guns Captured In Joliet After Driving Wrong Way On 1-Way Street: Police

JOLIET, IL — Three acquaintances from Joliet, Lockport and Crest Hill all find themselves facing a slew of criminal charges as a result of their Friday night arrests in the city of Joliet by the Joliet Police Department.

• Jevon Lesley: unlawful possession of a machine gun, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and aggravated possession of a stolen firearm. Lesley was also cited for driving the wrong way on a one-way street and unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver.

• Reginald Tate III: aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. Tate was also cited for unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger.
• John Humphrey III: possession of a controlled substance. Humphrey was also cited for unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said at 7:26 p.m. Friday, an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a Jeep Cherokee near Western Avenue and Broadway Street after the vehicle was traveling the wrong way on a one-way section of Western Avenue. The vehicle eventually came to a stop near Hickory Street and Lafayette Street.

The driver was identified as Jevon Lesley, 33, of Crest Hill. The passengers were identified as Reginald Tate III, age 23, of Joliet and John Humphrey III, age 32, of Lockport.

During the traffic stop, officers observed suspected cannabis inside the vehicle and learned that both Lesley and
Humphrey were on parole, according to police.

English revealed that a search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of a loaded 9mm handgun equipped with an illegal machine gun conversion device, known as a switch, and a loaded .40-caliber handgun.

The 9mm handgun had previously been reported stolen in Chicago, while the .40-caliber handgun had been
reported stolen in Missouri.

Officers determined that Lesley is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms. Officers also learned that Tate did not possess a valid Illinois FOID card or concealed carry license and had an active Will County warrant for failing to appear in court on traffic charges.

"During searches conducted as part of the investigation, officers recovered suspected MDMA, cocaine, and cannabis from Humphrey. Officers also recovered suspected MDMA and cannabis from Tate. The suspected cannabis located inside the vehicle was determined to belong to Lesley," English said.
