4 Vehicle Crash On Jefferson As Joliet Motorist Blows Red Light: Cops

While on the scene, Joliet police heard the crash at the intersection of West Jefferson Street and North Larkin Avenue.

JOLIET, IL — While Joliet police officers were at the White Castle restaurant investigating an unrelated incident, the officers heard a loud crash outside the fast-food restaurant. It was 35-year-old Joliet motorist Edgar Delgado-Hernandez blowing the red light and causing a crash with three other vehicles, according to his arrest report.

In addition to the four traffic tickets, Delgado-Hernandez was charged of aggravated assault to a peace officer, Joliet police noted.

The wreck happened around 1:25 a.m. on Monday.

According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, the following events led to the Joliet motorist's arrest:

  • Delgado-Hernandez was driving a Chevrolet Impala westbound on West Jefferson Street approaching North Larkin Avenue when Delgado-Hernandez disobeyed a red light and entered the intersection, striking a Hyundai Sonata driven by an 80-year-old Naperville man who was northbound on North Larkin Avenue.
  • The collision forced Delgado-Hernandez’s vehicle into a Ford Fusion driven by a 19-year-old woman from Wilmington as she was driving southbound North Larkin Avenue at West Jefferson Street and stopped in the left turn lane. A fourth vehicle involved in the wreck was a Toyota Yaris driven by a 31-year-old Joliet man who was southbound North Larkin Avenue at West Jefferson Street stopped at the light at the intersection.
  • While officers were investigating the crash, Delgado-Hernandez grew agitated and approached an officer in an aggressive stance, causing the officer to direct him away and Delgado- Hernandez fell to the ground, English announced.
  • Both Delgado- Hernandez and the senior citizen from Naperville were taken to Ascension St Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department for minor injuries. The other drivers were uninjured.
  • Delgado Hernandez was also cited for Disobeying a Traffic Control Device, Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, and Driving While License Suspended and his vehicle was towed from the scene.

Delgado-Hernandez was later released from the hospital, and then he was processed at the Joliet police station and released on a Notice to Appear.
