4 Critically Injured Joliet Crash Victims Sent To Different Hospitals

A Volkswagen Passat with two men and three women was eastbound on McDonough Street approaching South Chicago Street, Joliet police said.

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Police Department announced four people remain in critical condition at Chicago area hospitals and one person is now in stable condition at St. Joe's hospital following Monday morning's horrific crash with a semi-trailer.

The 28--year-old Joliet driver of the car drove through a red light and he was hit by the semi that had the green light at the intersection, according to Joliet police.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said at 5:12 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of South Chicago Street and McDonough Street for a crash with injuries.

According to English:

A Volkswagen Passat driven by the 28-year-old Joliet man was eastbound on McDonough Street approaching South Chicago Street. The Volkswagen entered the intersection and struck the trailer of an International Harvester semi-truck that was southbound on South Chicago Street.

The traffic light was green for southbound Chicago Street traffic and red for eastbound McDonough Street traffic.

The male driver of the semi-truck was uninjured in the crash.

Four passengers in the Volkswagen: a 26-year-old Joliet man, and three women, ages 30, of Joliet, 30, of Joliet and 25 of El Paso, Texas, were also hurt. The driver and the 25-year-old El Paso woman were taken to Silver Cross in critical condition and later rushed by ambulance to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. They remained critical as of Monday evening.

The 26-year-old Joliet man who was a passenger and both of the 30-year-old Joliet women also riding inside the Volkswagen were taken to Ascension St. Joe's. From there, the 26-year-old man and one of the 30-year-old women were moved to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, still critical.

The fifth person injured, the second 30-year-old Joliet woman, was taken to St. Joe's and she is now stable.

The 34-year-old young man from Bensenville who drove the semi-trailer was uninjured in the crash.
